Hawg leeeg!!!!

I got me a big ol “Wyoming cowboy gun” (large .357 magnum revolver, a.k.a. a “hog leg” revolver.) It’s made in Newport, New Hampshire by the Ruger company. It’s the Ruger GP100, the one with the 6-inch barrel.  It ‘s pretty heavy. One review I read of it said “Great gun, and it doubles as a club!” lol…

We also got a new rifle today, a .308 caliber from a Japanese company called “Howa”, they make good guns for the money. The ironic thing is that it’s illegal to own a gun in Japan! Will work for hunting deer and antelope if we ever get around to that.

You, sir, are a 6-gun totin’ Wyomingite!

Ruger makes good guns. I own a few. For many years I was pissed at them and boycotted their products because at one point, way WAY back when, they banned sale of 30-round mags for their Mini-14 to civilians. Maybe even the 20-round mags; I can’t remember now. But it was a chickenshit move.

But we’ve forgiven each other now.

Have fun, and remember to keep the part with the hole in it pointing away from you!

^^Nunzio X^^, Bill Ruger (the owner of the company at the time) was a total sellout and in general a bad person. Supported the assault weapons ban and everything, he hated the idea of any lowly civilian having the 20 or 30 round mags for thier Mini 14. (A lackluster gun anyway IMO) He only intended to sell those to the proper authorities…

Ruger makes good revolvers, all the ones I have handled seemed a lot sturdier than S&W even. Besides my beloved 10/22 a revolver is one of the only other Ruger products I’d personally buy, though.

Give us a report on that rifle though, it looks like a decent shooter. Did you buy the scope or did it come with it? If the latter, is the included optic and mount any good?

yeah, I know about Ruger’s politics. Funny though, two of the three Ruger’s we have are only six rounds, not for political reasons, but by design of what kind of gun they are (the revolver, and the pocket mousegun LCP .380).

We have a 10/22 also, love it too.

Shot the revolver and the new rifle today, both are great guns for the money. (about 500 bucks each). The scope came with the rifle.

The size of this hawg leg makes the recoil minimal. I shot about 100 rd of .357 through it today (plus about 50 rd of .38 special.) Felt fine.

Shooting two five-rd runs through my snubbie makes my hands hurt.

The hawg leg is pretty accurate too. At 85 feet I was putting them all in a ten-inch circle, and a lot of them in a three-inch circle. That’s pretty good for me.

You will be very happy with the Howa, it’s rated up there for out of the box accuracy and reliability and it will last you for years to come.

    Yay!

    we liked it a lot.

It’s the first gun we’ve owned with a halfway decent scope. Now that I can actually SEE the target, I realize that my problem with shooting accurately at a distance is that I SHAKE a little bit. Too much caffeine and nicotine.

So I’m gonna guess you got this one?:

That does seem like a really good scope. Damn fine rifle, too. The nice folks at Sniper Central market a very nice entry level package based on a Howa rifle for right around $1000, I may get one. You know…someday….When I have $1000 laying around.

As far as the shaking issue, look into maybe getting a bipod or something, that would help tremendously.

I had a bipod on my FAL, that helped.

I wrap the sling of any rifle around my left wrist. That helps. And I can shoot well prone (on my belly).

    Good deal!

I’m a fan of going prone and using my pack as a rest.

We’ve made up names for the guns. The rifle is “Howa San” and the revolver is “Big Lacy.”
