Interview proper starts about 16 minutes in. We talk a lot about anarchy vs. statism, liberty, drugs, 80s punk rock, jello biafra, dead kennedys, The Dwarves, guns, weed, and growing old with grace. Blag plays a bunch of violent songs that have nothing to do with me or my ideals, and asks me some rote questions about liberty that I get asked every time a non-libertarian questions me about my beliefs.

I think he actually did ask me “But who would take care of the roads?”, but then didn’t use that part.

All in all, a fun time was had by all, and I really like Blag. And I’ll turn him into an anarchist yet.

There’s a good new series on Discovery Channel, Moonshiners.

Has real-ex moonshiners re-creating distilling and running untaxed booze like they’re really doing it. I thought it was reality TV until I looked it up.

While no real illegal alcohol is produced on the show, it documents their practice, law-evading techniques, and life.

Though I did wonder why people appearing to be committing felonies were voluntarily showing their faces on TV. I’m wondering if their involvement in the show is part of a plea deal. lol. ….though probably not….while the show does illustrate the legal dangers, it also makes moonshining look very exciting and profitable.

One classic scene is one of the moonshiners talking to an ex-moonshiner who went “legit”, who now runs a licensed, taxed distillery. The moonshiner looked like he was going to vomit when the “legit” moonshiner started explaining all the fees, taxes, regulations and hoops he’d have to jump through. Best part of that bit is where the “legit” guy shows the other guy his “USDA-approved rake” he uses to move the mash. Moonshiner says “Well I ain’t never heard of such a thing!” (And why should he have?)

The show is entertaining though. It also has everything to horrify big-city folk: southern accents, rednecks with odd names (Popcorn, Tickle), men in overalls with no shirts, open hatred of the federal government, blatant disdain for nanny laws, open hatred of cops and fed goons, grizzled wizened coots with shotguns, drunk driving, and guys shooting bunnies from their trucks then fryin’ ‘em up to eat on the tailgate.

Best line in the series: “If you love your country you gotta love moonshine.”

Wikipedia says of the old guy, Popcorn: “Marvin Sutton aka ‘Popcorn’ is one of the most notorious moonshiners that ever lived. At one time, his liquor was so valuable that people often used it as currency.”

My best friend and partner in thought-crime, Neema Vedadi, made me about the coolest Christmas present ever. A Freedom Feens 2012 calender. It’s awesome. And no we aren’t selling them. We’re going to make you wait a year and sell them starting 2013 Freedom Feens calenders next fall.

I love this thing and am really touched by it. He sent me two of them, one for me, one for DJ.

He even made up new holidays on it, like Presidents Day is now “Think about the crimes of the Executive Branch” day. And the 4th of July is now “People fed up with government decide the answer is government” day.

Dreamhost Rocks!

Statist and square web host Godaddy supports the horrible innovation-killing SOPA Act that’s being considered in Congress. A lot of people have threatened to leave, so Godaddy issued a half-assed press release saying that they no longer really support SOPA. But they have not let Congress know, so as far as Congress knows, the most popular domain registrar and web host Goddaddy still supports SOPA. And regardless, you don’t change what you feel just by saying you’ve changed your mind because people complained. You don’t change what’s inside your head by putting on a different hat, ya know?

GoDaddy isn’t popular because they’re good, they’re popular because they have crappy Superbowl ads with a scantily clad second-rate NASCAR driver as their spokes-chick.

I ditched GoDaddy years ago. Though I recently helped a friend move a site away from there. They still suck. Their business practices remind me of a gold-digging abusive lover. And their hosting sucks, it’s slow, and their interfaces are hard to navigate, and they shove ads at you at every turn. And their tech support is practically non-existent. Hard to get a human, they just sent me auto-replies with links to a Wiki that didn’t answer my questions. They kind of remind me of dealing with the DMV.

I’m now using DreamHost. They rock. I’ve used them for seven years. They offer inexpensive web hosting and domain registration (cheaper than GoDaddy), free privacy listing (GoDaddy charges), and they don’t try to upsell you every five minutes like GoDaddy.) They have one-click installs for WordPress and many other great free services, and their tech support is really good and prompt.  CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP and I get a few free months. But I wouldn’t recommend anything I don’t use and love.
