Starting January 1st, 2012, by law, regular incandescent lightbulbs are going to be gone from store shelves. They won’t be illegal, they will just be gone. This is thanks to the nanny politicians deciding they weren’t good for the environment, and instead replacing them with mercury-laden CFLs that look crappy, cost a lot, and legally require an FDA-approved cleanup crew if you break one in your home! Maybe that’s what Obama meant by “creating green jobs. Though you can’t blame only the Democrats for lightbulbs disappearing. This was actually pushed through by the UN on a global scale as part of Agenda 21, and was signed off under a Republican Congress and George W. Bush in 2007. It just happens to go into effect on the first day of 2012.

So today the wife and I did our usual shopping at WalMart, but got a second cart and filled it with incandescent lightbulbs. Our hope is that this will hold us over until the price of LED bulbs comes down. We like them a lot more than the CFLs. They have better color warmth, and they’re not toxic if you drop them.

We also wanted extra bulbs because one of our cats, Fuzzy, gets cold easily and he loves to sit right under a warm reading lamp baking his little head. CFLs and LEDs don’t give off a noticeable amount of heat.

This would probably be a good opportunity too for any bootleggers who want to stock up and sell bulbs next year when they’re gone. It’s an interesting black market opportunity, because my understanding is that it won’t be illegal to have them, there just won’t be any in the stores. An enterprising person who buys a few hundred now could probably make a killing in lightbulb futures, selling them next year on eBay or from a trench coat in the parking lot of WalMart!

Don’t just see the free market, BE the free market!
